1. Light hydrocarbon conversion
2. Zeolite synthesis
Shenglin Liu is professor of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. More than 100 of his papers have been published and 20 of his national and international patents have been granted.
He has been engulfed himself in the research fields as following: Firstly in the synthesis of zeolite: Molecular sieve is one kind of material with special, but regular, pore-channel structure and very large surface area as well as stable solid acidity. The successful synthesis of ZSM-11, MCM-22, ZSM-35, and MCM-49 zeolites brings a prospective to development of zeolite sciences.
Then in the utilization of zeolite in light hydrocarbon conversion: More than 15 commercial plants of direct alkylation of benzene with dilute ethylene in FCC off-gas to produce ethylbenzene have been put into operation in China. And then in the Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) aromatization into aromatic enriched gasoline: Converting LPG into aromatic enriched gasoline can not only promote the high efficient and value utilization of LPG, but also solve efficiently the shortage of high quality gasoline in our country. He developed a novel catalyst of LPG aromatization, and designed unique reaction process. In 2011, the technology is commercially applied in a 200,000 t /a plant. In addition, in the pyridine bases synthesis from formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and ammonia: Pyridine bases, i.e. pyridine and picolines, are the key important family of heterocyclic compounds for the production of various intermediates of pharmaceutical, agricultural, and other fine chemicals. He designed a fluid bed catalyst and applied commercially in a 25,000 t/a plant in 2008.
