On October 12 and 13, the BP-DICP 20th Anniversary Celebration & Green and Low-carbon Technology Symposium were held in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). More than 200 distinguished guests participated in this event, including the senior vice president of BP and President of BP China, Mr. YANG Shixu, Senior Vice President of BP Path Innovation, Mr. Mahesh Natarajan, Deputy Director of Dalian Science and Technology Bureau, Mr. JIANG Xinghai, Director of the DICP, Professor LIU Zhongmin, Deputy Directors of DICP, Prof. LI Xianfeng and Prof. HUANG Yanqiang, Academician of CAS LI Can, and fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering CHEN Zhongwei.
During the celebration, Prof. LIU reviewed the collaborative journey and milestone events of DICP and BP over the past 20 years, sharing the fruitful results achieved in various areas, such as scientific research cooperation, technological innovation, and talent development. He expressed the institute's willingness to continue its close partnership with BP, working together to advance green and low-carbon technological innovation and sustainable development.
Mr. YANG highly praised the achievements of the two parties in the energy field during their 20 years of collaboration. He stated that the DICP is an important partner of the BP and expressed its commitment to addressing global climate change and environmental challenges, striving to build a cleaner and more sustainable future.
Mr. JIANG commemorated the 20-year journey of cooperation and innovation between the DICP and BP. He noted that their collaboration brought new vitality to Dalian's innovative industries and set an example for international energy cooperation.
During the event, Prof. LI and Mr. Mahesh Natarajan signed a green-energy-related Technology Agreement on behalf of the DICP and BP, respectively, marking an important milestone in mutual collaboration in green energy. This agreement has played a positive role in promoting the transformation and demonstration of a green energy field for both parties.
During the subsequent Green and Low-carbon Technology symposium, Prof. LI delivered a keynote presentation titled "Green Hydrogen and Liquid Sunshine, the strategies toward Carbon Neutrality". He emphasized the importance of developing green hydrogen and large-scale liquid sunshine technologies as well as downstream chemical technology advancements to address climate change and achieve carbon-neutrality goals.
Kirsty, the Vice President of BP Advanced Bio & Physical Sciences, presented a keynote titled "Clean Technology Development for a Sustainable Future". She outlines BP's future industrial strategies within the low-carbon advanced biological and physical sciences sector, focusing on advancing technologies in hydrogen, biofuels, synthetic fuels, and other areas to promote BP's sustainability and net-zero objectives.
Additionally, researchers from the DICP have presented various topics, including long-duration energy storage, advanced battery technologies, hydrogen storage materials, advanced characterization, artificial intelligence, and biomass conversion. These presentations led to lively discussions between the DICP researchers and BP guests.
During the event, BP guests also visited the Changxing Island Campus of DICP, the DICP Exhibition Hall, the Biotechnology Division of DICP, and the Energy Storage Division of DICP.
Since 2002, the DICP, commissioned by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has collaborated with BP to establish the first BP research center in Asia, known as the "Center for Clean Energy Facing the Future (CEFTF)". Building on this foundation, both parties furthered their cooperation in the development of the applied technology. In 2011, they established the Energy Innovation Laboratory (EIL) and completed over 50 joint projects in various areas, including hydrogen energy, biomass conversion, catalytic conversion, green chemical manufacturing, and advanced characterization technology.
