Lecture: Recent Advances in the Multi-scale Simulation of Mass, Momentum and Heat Transfer in Multiphase Chemical Reactors

Abstract:

Dense multiphase flows involving momentum, mass and heat transfer are frequently encountered in industrial processes involving granulation, coating and polymerization. In these flows the complex phase interactions govern the prevailing flow phenomena such as the formation and evolution of heterogeneous structures to a large extent. These structures have significant impact on the quality of the contact between the phases and as a direct consequence thereof strongly affect reactor performance. Additional complexities arise due to enhanced dissipation due to wet particle-particle collisions which prevail in processes such as spray drying, coating, granulation and gas phase polymerization.

Due to the inherent complexity of these multiphase flows a multi-scale modeling approach is adopted in which the interactions between the phases can be properly accounted for. The idea is essentially that detailed models are used to generate closures for the interphase transfer coefficients to feed continuum models which can be used to compute the system behavior on a much larger (industrial) scale. In this lecture recent advances in the area of multi-scale simulation of dense multi-phase flows will be highlighted with emphasis on coupled mass, momentum and heat transfer. In addition, areas which need substantial further attention will be discussed as well as the challenges for detailed experimental validation.

Introduction:

Professor J.A.M (Hans) Kuipers graduated in 1985 at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Twente, the Netherlands. In 1990 he received his PhD degree and was appointed as assistant professor in the Reaction Engineering group. In 1999 he was appointed full professor in Fundamentals of Chemical Reaction Engineering at the University of Twente. He moved in 2010 to Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) as full professor and headed the group Multiphase Reactors. Prof. Kuipers (co-) authored 358 publications in peer-reviewed journals with a total number of citations of 12815 and a Hirsch index of 47, which is amongst the top scientists of chemical reaction engineering. In 2013 he became the first person who published more than 100 papers in Chemical Engineering Science.

He serves/served on the editorial boards of International Journal of Multiphase Flow, Acta Mechanica, Chemical Engineering Science, AIChE Journal, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research, Powder Technology, and Particuology. Kuipers obtained a prestigious TOP CW NWO (2005) grant from The Netherlands Science Foundation (NWO) and an Advanced ERC grant (2010) from the European Research Council. He is co-recipient of a 31.9 million euro NWO gravitation grant for the "Netherlands Center for Multiscale Catalytic Energy Conversion" (2013). He was Scientific Director of the Institute of Mechanics, Processes and Control (IMPACT) of the University of Twente (2006-2010) and serves/served on several boards and panels for research, including the Strategic Council of the University of Twente. He is now acting as program director Process Technology and member of the Executive Board (EB) of the Advanced Research Center (ARC) Chemical Building Blocks Consortium (CBBC) in the Netherlands. He was elected to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015.
