Abstract:
Obesity is caused by the impaired nutrients homeostasis. As mitochondria consume oxygen to convert nutrients into energy, mitochondria are well known as the powerhouse of the cell. Although oxygen consumption is widely used as a measurement of mitochondrial activity in most metabolic studies, the elusive mitochondrial metabolism is far beyond oxygen consumption. Using stable isotope tracing, we can precisely monitor the glucose and glutamine dependent pathways under physiology and pathology conditions. We found that the citrate transportation is reversible crossing mitochondrial membrane, and mitochondrial citrate uptake supports intracellular reactive oxygen species homeostasis. Mitochondria are the central metabolic organelles, balancing intracellular carbohydrates, amino acids and fatty acids distribution. A good understanding of mitochondrial metabolism will provide new targets to prevent and treat obesity and diabetes.
Introduction:
Lei-Jiang, Ph.D., received a bachelor's degree from Wuhan University in 2004. He received his Ph.D. degree from Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS in 2009. From 2009 to 2016, he worked as a postdoctoral in UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX. Now he works as an assistant professor in Department of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Research Institute, Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope, Duarte, CA. Representative works were published in Nature, J Biol Chem, Cell Metabolism, Nature cell biology, Oncogene, and so on.
