Abstract:
Polymer solar cells have attracted much attention due to their potential for the fabrication of light-weight, large-area, and flexible photovoltaic devices through low-cost solution processing. Compared to most symmetry copolymerized monomers, the strategy of symmetry-breaking applicable in building blocks was employed by us to design new light-harvesting polymers. A series of asymmetric benzodithiophenes (BDTs) with alkoxyl (1D) and aromatic (2D) substituted groups were designed as the electron-rich units for constructing donor-acceptor copolymers. The asymmetry BDTs well combine the advantages of both 1D and 2D symmetry BDTs with good solubility, enhanced intermolecular π-π interactions, extended conjugated degree and appropriate planarity, which are favorable to obtain high efficiency polymer solar cells. As a result, photovoltaic properties of the resulted polymers are improved greatly in comparison with corresponding symmetry BDT based polymers. Thus, it would be a promising approach to design prospective organic opto-electronic materials employing the symmetry-breaking strategy. Meanwhile, in this talk, other strategies proposed by us will be introduced.
