Abstract:
Exposure to airborne pollutants is a major environmental challenge that affects human health across the world, with the impact being particularly severe in China nowadays. To explore the sources, transport and transformation in the atmosphere, and to assess human’s exposure to toxic components of airborne pollution are essential to set-up the linkage between air pollution and human health, and thus help in devising mitigation strategies and regulation to protect public health. Focusing on this key scientific issue, Dr. Qiu will introduce some preliminary results on human’s exposure to airborne pollutants, mainly particulate matter, and the health effects.
Lecturer Introduction:
Dr. Xinghua Qiu got his bachelor degree in applied chemistry in 2000 and Ph.D in environmental chemistry in the early 2006 in Peking University. Afterward he worked as postdoctoral associate in Prof. Ronald Hites’ lab in Indiana University. Now he is an associate professor in College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University. Dr. Qiu has been working diligently in the field of human exposure to airborne pollutant and the subsequent health effects. He has built up a laboratory for exposure analysis, and developed state-of-art methods for the analysis of organic pollutants in both environmental and human biological samples. Based on this technique, he has studied organic pollutants especially persistent ones in the atmosphere to explore their sources and behaviors. On the other hand, linkage between pollutant exposure and health effects was set up through the analysis of trace organic pollutants (and metabolites) in humans. Over the course of academic career, he has published 30 peer-reviewed articles in highly acclaimed international journals such as PNAS, EHP, and ES&T as the first or corresponding author. These papers have >1300 citations, with the highest citation of >330 times for a single article. Dr. Qiu has been enrolled in the National Top-Notch Young Talent program in 2015, won the Fund for Excellent Young Scientists supported by NSFC in 2013, and the first prize in Natural Science Award of MOE of China as the 2nd achiever in 2015.
