Introduction:

Prof. Lu obtained his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in June 1998. He ever worked as a professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the great lakes bioenergy research center

of the U.S. Department of Energy. Since 2015, he served as director of the State Key Laboratory of Pulp and Paper Engineering, South China University of Technology.

Prof. Lu’s research interest is in the area of basic and applied research of Wood Chemistry and Pulping Chemistry. The main researches focus on the synthesis of chemical structure model of plant cell wall, the establishment of analytical methods for lignin chemical structure, the development and utilization of biomass and so on. Prof. Lu published more than 90 articles cited more than 3000 times by other researchers in the journals of Agricultural Chemistry. He was invited to attend international conferences and academic reports more than 10 times. Prof. Lu participated more than 10 research projects from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Energy with a total budget of about five million dollars.

Abstract:

Lignin compounds can be simple monomeric or polymeric, which are structurally defined compounds being similar or exact fragment structures in lignin polymers. This presentation briefly summarize commonly used methods to synthesize these lignin model compounds. The applications of lignin compounds in NMR characterization of lignins aimed to identify new structures, understand biosynthesis pathway of lignin formation will be discussed.
