Prof. Mingyuan HE, a Chinese Academy of Sciences Academician and professor at East China Normal University, visited DICP on July 14. Prof. HE’s research program focuses on catalytic materials, in particular concerning oil refining processes, a topic that is of great interest to the faculty and students at DICP.
During his visit, Prof. HE exchanged research ideas with staff at several of the laboratories at DICP. He also gave a lecture entitled, “Carbon: Where does it come from and where does it go to?” in the conference room of the Basic Energy Science Building. Prof. Tao ZHANG, the Director of DICP, hosted the lecture and delivered a welcome speech on behalf of DICP. In his lecture, Prof. HE presented his unique view on green energy, which he stated includes four processes: 1) low carbon conversation and natural gas conversation, 2) thermochemical hydrolysis-APR fermentation, 3) CO2 conversion to methanol and CO, and 4) artificial photosynthesis. He discussed current research challenges in green energy, placing special emphasis on biomass and pointing out that biomass will be important moving foraward. Prof. HE emphasized the key points of carbon science in the 21st century, which he outlined were methanol synthesis, CO2 reduction, artificial photosynthesis, and water splitting.
Prof. HE’s group has published over 200 scientific papers and has more than 150 patents on energy and catalysis. His research group has developed a number of catalysts for oil refining, as well as a new synthetic methods and modifications for zeolites. Prof. HE was awarded the L’ordre des Palmes académiques in 2012.(Text by QU Lijuan/Photo by TAN Yuan and LIU Wansheng)
