The project “High pressure PTFE hollow fiber membrane contactor (MBC) and its application” is jointly developed for CO2 removal from natural gas by Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP, CAS), Malaysia Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) and Shanghai Bi Ke Clean Energy Technology Co., Ltd (CECC). The pilot scale MBC commissioning was firstly successfully conducted in September 2014, and the results of CO2 content in treated natural gas met the contract requirements. In September 2015, the developed Generation-II MBC significantly reduced the CO2 content and met the liquefied natural gas (LNG) requirements. The pilot plant was continuously operated in stable mode for 1200 hours. In April 2016, the Generation-III MBC membrane and module were successfully developed, and the pilot plant commissioning was successfully conducted on May 10. Compared to the Generation-II MBC, the treatment capacity of natural gas was greatly improved (more than two times), which significantly enhanced the technological economy. Therefore, PETRONAS had signed a new stage R&D agreement with DICP, and wish to promote the commercialization of MBC technology in future.(Text by Kang Guodong /Photo by Liu Dandan)
