On April 19th, Bruker FTMS 2016 User Meeting was held in DICP. Professor XU Guowang and Bruker General Sales Manager of China Miss LU Jing presided over the meeting. Over 60 PhD students and researchers inside and outside DICP participated in this meeting.
In the morning, Prof. Phillippe Schmitt-Kopplin ― director of the independent research unit "Analytical Biogeochemistry" at the Helmholtz Zentrum München first gave an excellent lecture entitled “Ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry as an essential tool in biology - and environmental metabolomics”. Prof. Phillippe Schmitt-Kopplin exhibited the latest application and achievements of DI-FT-ICR-MS technology in research fields of environment, food and life science in the lecture. He explained how to use the specific Bruker FTMS which possesses super high resolution, super high mass accuracy and high sensitivity together with a holistic research strategy and work flow, to integrate the research outcome into various background and finally to realize the transformation from structure to function through detailed research cases. And then, Bruker General Sales Manager of Global Marketing Department Dr. Michael Easterling gave a speech entitled “Practical applications of extreme mass spectrometry in the life sciences” on the characteristics of FT-ICR-MS in terms of high resolution, high mass accuracy and many different fragmentation patterns. The presentation demonstrated the unparalleled superiority of FTMS in deducing the molecular formula of small molecules and assigning the molecular structure of unknown compounds with isotopic fine structures. Dr. Michael Easterling also presented several excellent applications of FTMS image in cell, tissue and animals in the lecture.

In the afternoon, several key users of FT-ICR-MS including Prof. LI Zhili, Prof. SHI Quan, Prof. ZHOU Jiang and Prof. LIN Zhiwei from Universities and Institutes in China gave presentations on topics of FTMS in tumor tissue image, petroleum and environmental sample analyses, molecule-molecule interaction, drugs and their metabolites structure identification, and metalorganic compound structure elucidation, respectively. They shared their latest research achievements in FT-ICR-MS and expanded in-depth exchanges and discussions with the participants.
After the meeting, Prof. Phillippe Schmitt-Kopplin, Dr. Michael Easterling and the key users of FTMS in China visited Groups of DNL2001 and DNL2003. They listened closely to the introductions by the relevant persons in charge and had wide communications with them.
Prof. Phillippe Schmitt-Kopplin is director of the independent research unit "Analytical Biogeochemistry" at the Helmholtz Zentrum München, Munich, Germany. He has long engaged in the novel technology developments and method applications of FT-ICR-MS especially in research fields of environmental and food sample analyses and accumulated a wealth of experience.
