Important Progress in Studies on High-throughput Drug Screening with Model Organisms on Microfluidic Chips

  The DICP research group, with Prof. QIN Jianhua and Prof. LIN Bingcheng as the Group Leaders, has made important progress in the investigation of drug screening with model organisms on microfluidic chips. By using nano-liter scale high throughput liquid droplets on chips as the microreactors, and with classical model organism of Caenorhabditis elegans as the model, they have succeeded in establishing for the first time a drug screening microfluidic system, which has been utilized for the screening of drugs of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease. These research results were published in the latest issue of the journal Lab on a Chip.

  The published paper was soon cited by the international journal of Chemical Biology in the highlighted column, with a comment written by Prof. N. Chronis, which remarked that: "The most exciting part is the system's ability to isolate single worms from a population and transport them individually, The proposed technique has the advantage of being (potentially) high-throughput, It facilitates the application of a chemical or drug - allowing one to record an immediate change in behaviour."
