Ionic Liquids Group start-up
  English.dicp.cas.cn    Posted:2008-02-26

The Ionic Liquids Group within DICP starts up indicated by the register of Dr. Urs Welz-Biermann, the group leader of China Ionic Liquid Laboratory (CHILL), which established after seriously assessment.

CHILL was initiated as joint laboratory by DICP, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Queens University Ionic Liquids Laboratory (QUILL) in November 2006. The activity in this laboratory will officially start with the appointment of Prof. Dr. Urs Welz-Biermann in January 2008. This Laboratory is an important part of future National Clean Energy Laboratory which will be a research base of clean energy related topics in China.

In the 7 years of his career in the field of Ionic Liquids, Prof. Dr. Urs Welz-Biermann gained an extraordinary experience in the design, synthesis and characterization of various new Ionic liquids. In several Merck internal and customer projects, he experienced the requirements for Ionic Liquids to effectively apply them to the specific demands of these applications. Due to his leading work in the field of Ionic Liquids his new China Ionic Liquids Laboratory is well established in the world wide network of Ionic Liquids research and in contact with major industrial partners using and producing Ionic Liquids.

His research interests include the design, preparation, chemistry and properties of new functionalized ionic liquids and their environmental impact. The principal aim of his work is to explore, develop and understand the role of ionic liquids as media for a wide range of applications in electrochemistry, green chemistry, clean energy, biotechnology, catalysis, organic and inorganic synthesis, extractions and separations, metal plating, photovoltaic, batteries and super capacitors.

*Prof. Ken Seddon (Director of QUILL) holds an Honorary Chair at CHILL/DICP, and is the executive chairman of the program, which will have strong contacts with QUILL.
