Prof. XIAO Peigen, Member of CAE, Prof. CHEN Shilin, Director, and Dr. PENG Yong, Assistant to the Director, all from the Institute of Medical Plants, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences(CAMS) & Peking Union Medical College(PUMC), visited DICP for academic exchange on 12th and 13th of January.
During their visit, Prof. XIAO was invited to deliver a lecture entitled "Chinese Healthy Food - Principles, Contents and Prospects". In his lecture, Prof. XIAO first emphasized the old Chinese principle of "common origin for food and medicine", then introduced the health problems facing the Chinese people, and explained the long history of Chinese healthy food as well as the functions and mechanisms of some popular Chinese medicals plants such as semen nelumbinis and honeysuckles. As for prospects, he remarked that research on healthy food should focus on basic studies as well as evaluation and assessment of their medical functions.
Prof. CHEN was also invited to give a lecture on the topic of "Innovation and Practice in the Research of Chinese Medicine Resources." In his presentation, he emphasized the importance of innovation in methodology and establishment of methodology systems for the research of Chinese medicine resources. He also introduced the application of remote sensing techniques in the surveying of Chinese medicines, as well as the recently developed DNA barcoding technique for the classification and determination of Chinese medicines.
