Microfluidics and its Applications in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering

Abstract

Microfluidic systems offer many advantages over conventional macro-scale flow systems, particularly with respect to allowing a precise control of fluidic and reaction conditions, and mimicking physiological architectures and flow states with direct access to a wide range of physical parameters of interest. In addition, coupling with microscope-based imaging techniques provides a platform for the detection and quantification of dynamic behaviour of both fluidics and mass transfer in situ with defined resolutions. In this paper, the development of microfluidic systems is discussed for the formation of both nano- and micro- structured drug delivery systems with controllable properties in a continuous-flow format. The drug delivery systems have been characterised, both physically and biologically using microfluidic approaches. Biomicrofluidics is also applied for the characterisation of process dynamics in therapeutic embolisation, varicose veins sclerotherapy, and stented ureteric fluidics.

 

Introduction

Prof. Xunli Zhang graduated from Northwest University (Xi'an, China), where he received his B.Eng. in Chemical Engineering and a Master's degree in Chemical Reaction Engineering. He was awarded a Ph.D. degree by the University of London in 2000 following studies at Imperial College London. He is currently a Professor at the University of Southampton, with research interests in the development of microfluidics and Lab-on-a-Chip technologies and their applications in bioanalysis, nanomedicine, biofluidics and flow chemistry. Dr Zhang is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
