Can monolayer oxide films promote reactivity?

Abstract:
   We report on structure‐reactivity relationship of so‐called “monolayer” oxide films. The first example deals with VOx on CeO2 supports in relation to methanol oxidation. Here we show evidence from STM, FTIR, and Photoemission on the growth mode and properties of vanadia aggregates on ceria, which is correlated with TPR data for methanol oxidation. The second example is concerned with the overgrowth of metal nanoparticles by oxide films as it occurs during SMSI. We show evidence for improved CO oxidation catalysis for Pt/Fe3O4 after overgrowth of the Pt particles with a FeO(111) layer. The origin of the surprising reactivity of the system will be discussed.
