Hydrogen-bonding in liquid alcohols from Raman spectroscopy

Abstract:
In this talk, I will present our Raman spectroscopic studies of hydrogen-bonding in liquid alcohols. A new method to precisely measure the depolarization ratio from  photoacoustic Raman spectroscopy has been developed. With the aid of this precise measurements and the highly resolved Raman spectrum, we found new spectral features in the C-H stretching vibrational region of gaseous and liquid ethanols, and the effects of hydrogen-bonding on the spectral intensity of antisymmetric stretching. For liquid methanol, we obtained the cluster distributions in pure liquid methanol, found the spectroscopic evidences of segregation effect in methanol-water  solution, and explained the abnormal chemical behavior of methanol in the concentration range of 20 - 40% from spectroscopic point of view.
