Invention Award for DICP’s Vanadium Battery Membrane Material

The research project of “High performance and low cost non-fluoride ion exchange membrane material for all vanadium redox flow battery(VRB)”, accomplished by the DICP research team headed by Prof. Huamin Zhang, has been awarded with the 2012 Second Class Invention Prize granted by the Liaoning Province government. The objective of this DICP project was to solve the existing problem of low selectivity in the conventional perfluorosulfonic acid ion exchange membrane employed in the manufacture of VRB. With the successful development of the high performance and low cost non-fluoride ion exchange membrane by the DICP scientists, the bottle-neck problem in VRB processing was overcome, and this laid the foundation for the production of VRB with completely “made in China” materials in our country. By utilizing this newly developed proprietary membrane material, DICP scientists have succeeded in constructing VRB modules with output powers of 500W, 1kW and 20kW, allowing DICP to occupy a leading position in this research area.
