New Progress in Enhancing Resolution of Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS)

The resolution problem is so far a bottle-neck for the development and application of the IMS. An enhancement in the resolution of the IMS will lower the false positive rate and improve the performance of the instrument. A new progress in this respect has been made by the DICP team headed by Prof. Haiyang Li, and their results were published in the recent issue of the journal of Analytical Chemistry http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ac300887g.

In this investigation, an ion gate with a BN-grid structure has been developed, which could prevent the permeating of the injection electric field into the drift field. As a result, the resolution of the IMS was further enhanced, such that the resolution for Cl¯ could be as high as 55. It is anticipated that this renovating work of the DICP team in the BN-grid gate has great significance in the R&D of high resolution drift tubes, in resolution enhancement and in miniaturization of the IMS.
