The Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), one of the leading research institutes in China, was established in 1949. In the past half century, the institute has become internationally recognized for its research in catalytic chemistry, chemical engineering, chemical laser and molecular reaction dynamics, organic synthesis and chromatography for modern analytic chemistry and biotechnology.

DICP focuses on sustainable energy research, environmental optimization, biotechnology and advanced materials in a multidisciplinary atmosphere. By strengthening technological integration and innovation, it aims to play an indispensable role in the national economy and national security and become a global leader in its field.

DICP houses one national laboratory, two state key laboratories, and five national engineering research centers. The Dalian National Lab of Clean Energy (DNL) is the first national laboratory in the field of energy research and integrates laboratories across DICP and other institutions. DNL is subdivided into 10 divisions and its research is focused on the efficient conversion and optimal utilization of fossil energy, clean energy conversion technologies and the economically viable use of solar and biomass energy. DICP’s other main laboratories include the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Analytical Chemistry, the Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, the Laboratory of Chemical Lasers, the State Key Laboratory of Molecular Reaction Dynamics, the Laboratory of Aerospace Catalysis and New Materials, and the Laboratory of Biotechnology.

Since its founding, DICP has produced numerous domestically and internationally renowned scientists and engineers. As of 2013, 17 of our scientists had been elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, three to the The World Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) and one to the Academy of Europe. DICP is home to 13 Thousand Talents Program scholars, 20 recipients of the National Science Foundation of China’s Distinguished Young Scholar Award, and 42 CAS Hundred Talents Program scholars. DICP currently has over 1,000 staff members, including 152 professors and 393 associate professors. DICP also hosts 66 visiting scholars (both international and domestic) and 89 postdoctoral researchers.

The institute’s educational programs are also first-rate. They attract outstanding students from all over China and give them the opportunity to carry out research using the most advanced experimental equipment and the best theoretical techniques. As of 2013, DICP had 831 graduate students.

Through the efforts of DICP’s scientists, staffs and graduate students, the institute has contributed greatly to the economic and technological development of China by its scientific accomplishments and its translation of fundamental science into useful technology. As of 2013, DICP faculty members had already received 86 National Awards for Science and Technology (S&T). In 2013, Professor Cunhao Zhang won the China’s Supreme S&T Award for his great contribution to research on chemical lasers and chemical reaction dynamics.

DICP is also the home to three research journals: the Chinese Journal of Catalysis, the Journal of Energy Chemistry (English), and the Chinese Journal of Chromatography. In 2012, these three journals were all named among the “Most Internationally Influential Academic Publications in China.”

DICP is an internationally well-connected institution. DICP has collaborative ties with institutions and companies from over 45 countries and regions. DICP faculty members play an active role in about 100 international academic communities. In the realm of industry, DICP has jointly built the DICP-BP Energy Innovation Laboratory (EIL) and the DICP-SABIC Research Center for Advanced Chemicals Production Technology.
